Art Sparks at San Miguel Academy: Sparking Empowerment Through Creativity

Art Sparks Creativity and Wellness Program began recently at San Miguel Academy in Newburgh. In introducing the course, artist educator Imogene Drummond explained her goal to help the fifth graders develop their individual creativity and to understand that each person is worthwhile and creative. Students are invariably surprised when told that as art is an expression of themselves, there is no right or wrong answer–so they cannot make a mistake! They are also surprised to hear that Imogene wants them to have fun!

During the initial session, the students watched Divine Sparks film, a whimsical story of transformation and wonder. After discussing the ideas in the film, they created a visual expression of their two favorite words in unusual relationships.

  • In Juliet’s poetic piece, she depicted the Moon reflecting the sea at night!
  • Balian created a fun piece of a bird whose wings are waves!
