San Miguel Academy on Univision

Univision reporter Peggy Carranza and her cameraman, Xavier, spent the day at San Miguel Academy in January 2022. Their report aired on Noticiero Univision, the flagship daily evening television news program of Noticias Univision, the news division of the American Spanish language broadcast television network, Univision.

Having come on a Friday, Peggy and Xavier arrived just in time for the weekly sing-a-long.  They then observed classes and project demonstrations, including the 6th grade acting Shakespeare, and STEAM demonstrations in our new STEAM Learning Center.  San Miguel Academy alumni and current intern Brian Lopez ’11 took them on a tour of Newburgh.  Driving around the city, it’s not hard to make the connection between the poverty and violence that characterizes life in Newburgh and the importance of the work of San Miguel Program. Following the tour, they spoke with a few students individually.  Peggy and Xavier ended their visit to San Miguel Academy the way many of our students do: at rowing practice.

We are grateful to Peggy and Xavier for spending time with us and getting to know our students and the San Miguel Program.  We always appreciate the opportunity to get the word out about our Program and the difference it’s making for our students and their families. With a 12 year commitment to each student, San Miguel Program is changing the trajectory of their lives to one of purpose, productivity, and promise.

Earlier in the school year, San Miguel Academy was featured on Tiempo, a weekly 30-minute round-table discussion show about topics affecting and relating to Latino communities on ABC7NY, hosted by Joe Torres.

“Thank you, Father Mark, for what I would argue is a transformative difference in the lives of many, many young men and women- many of them Latino- there in Newburgh, which is a challenging atmosphere… but in the midst of it all, you guys are making a huge difference.” – Joe Torres, ABC7NY.
