San Miguel Program receives $80,000 grant from the Theresa & Edward O’Toole Foundation

San Miguel Academy of Newburgh is please to announce that it has been awarded an $80,000 grant by the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Foundation for capital improvements.

in 2020, San Miguel Academy, through its umbrella organization San Miguel Program, was able to complete the purchase of its building, the former St. Francis of Assisi School at 245 Renwick Street, which they had been renting for seven years.  The purchase was made possible through the generous support of foundations, organizations, and individual donors, including previous grants by the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Foundation. With the stability of ownership,  San Miguel now turns towards updating and modernizing the building to suit and support its programming.

The purchase of 245 Renwick Street enables San Miguel Academy to continue to be a safe haven and source of support for students, families, and alumni. San Miguel Program’s 12-year commitment to each student helps them through middle school as well as high school, college, and other post-secondary options. With ever-expanding programs designed to meet and overcome the climb from poverty, San Miguel Program has become a human services center that offers middle school, after-school and summer programs, family support, and ongoing support for graduates. It serves as a bridge that links inner-city youth with educational institutions, community leaders, internships, volunteers, summer seminars for alumni, physical and mental health support, and employment opportunities.  Career readiness is a central focus of San Miguel Academy, with students developing 21st skills and proficiencies starting in fifth grade and continuing throughout their schooling.  San Miguel Academy recently began its 17th school year, with a total enrollment of 64 boys and girls, having started out with 15 5th grade boys in 2006.

Capital improvements, thanks to the funds provided by the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Foundation, will help further this mission, with facilities and programming to meet the needs of our community and to create opportunities for growth.
