About Us

San Miguel Academy of Newburgh is breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Students are engaged year-round in a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment that provides a high-quality education and creates opportunities far beyond middle school. Located in a community deeply affected by systemic poverty and violence, San Miguel serves as a beacon of hope for students and families seeking stability, opportunity, and long-term support.

Founded in 2006 as a middle school, San Miguel Academy has grown into the multi-faceted San Miguel Program, now serving more than 250 students and their families. Central to our mission is a 12-year commitment to every student, a model that supports students from middle school through high school graduation and beyond. San Miguel Program is entirely scholarship-driven, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of opportunity.

San Miguel students thrive academically and personally. The Program boasts a 98% graduation rate from independent day and boarding secondary schools and accelerated public school programs. After high school, graduates pursue the paths best suited to their goals, including college, trade school, and military service

In 2019, San Miguel Academy received its Certificate of Accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools. In 2020, the San Miguel Program purchased the former St. Francis School building after renting the space for seven years. Ownership of the campus solidified San Miguel’s long-term presence in the City of Newburgh and strengthened its role as a trusted community anchor for families in need.
