Summer Scholars Program

Summer Scholars Program

Relief from the heat of the street

The Summer Scholars Program (SSP) for incoming new students in our 5th grade, and our returning 6th-8th graders is a vital part of the 11-month, extended day and Saturday program at San Miguel Academy.  Our students live in the most impoverished and crime-filled districts in Newburgh, which creates learning deficits so that by the time they enter SMAN in 5th grade, they are approximately two years behind emotionally, academically and socially. Our model provides our students with more than 30% of the time spent in the local public school so that we may close the learning gaps and are on the same par as their national peers by graduation.

SSP is designed to improve reading skills, to provide our students with additional time for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) basics through hands-on learning and to have a day of fun at a benefactor’s pool where the students participate in swimming, a barbecue and sports, each week. In addition, SMAN ‘s SSP provides tutoring for our alumni as well as support for job interviews, college applications, and a space to meet and work out with their peers.  Some of the alumni work with the middle school students as assistant coaches, or work in the SMAN office.

Middle school students are taught through individual and group classes plus our interactive reading program, LightSail and the math program, ALEKS.  For the STEM learning projects, the students work in teams and the process of learning is the main objective.

San Miguel Academy of Newburgh admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
