San Miguel Academy

San Miguel Academy of Newburgh is a 5th – 8th grade middle school where students develop a sense of responsibility, respect and readiness for accessing an educational path appropriate to their talents.  Our highly individualized approach to education is effective in moving every child along according to their abilities. Our pedagogy is research based and relies on several learning partners such as Mohonk Preserve, Storm King Art Center, Stony Kill Farm, and the Malcolm Pray Achievement Center.  Supplementing traditional classroom learning and place-based learning are several web platforms where students can access opportunities to move forward in the curriculum at a more accelerated pace.  San Miguel’s multifaceted approach to instruction and learning has produced grade level performance and beyond for children who were once far behind in their prior schools.  Having opened in 2006 as an all-boys school, San Miguel began admitting girls in the 2020-2021 school year.

San Miguel Academy of Newburgh has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and School Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools.

Accreditation is a self-evaluation process that schools and school systems voluntarily use to demonstrate they are meeting a defined set of research-based performance standards. The standards examine schools in a holistic way, supplementing student-testing data to provide a more complete measure of a school’s performance and chart a strategic and realistic course for continuous school improvement. When it comes to evaluating schools and school systems, the Middle States Association looks at the whole school- not just test scores. We realize that improving outcomes requires a comprehensive approach. When we assess whether a school should be accredited we look at how the school performs in 12 key areas that make up our Standards for Accreditation:

Mission, Governance and Leadership | School Improvement Planning |  Finances | Facilities | School Organization and Staff |  Health and Safety |
Educational Program |
Assessment and Evidence of Student Learning |  Student Services | Student Life and Activities |  Information Resources
