Admissions
San Miguel Academy of Newburgh welcomes young men, as long as they have the will to learn and a desire to succeed in their personal, spiritual and educational lives. Preference is given to those students with demonstrated financial need. Admission is based on a number of factors including an application process, student and family interview, and performance and evaluation during an incoming 5th grade summer program. San Miguel Academy of Newburgh recognizes that each student brings with him a unique learning style, and every attempt is made to differentiate instruction to best serve each student.
San Miguel Academy has the capacity to serve up to 60 boys in the 5th through 8th grades. The 2009-2010 academic year enrollment is 56 boys in the following grades:
| 5th Grade |
16 students |
| 6th Grade |
14 students |
| 7th Grade |
14 students |
| 8th Grade |
12 students |
98% of the student body, or 55 of the 56 students at San Miguel Academy, are eligible for free or reduced price meals under the Title1 federal program and, as such, live below the poverty line. The students are primarily Hispanic (73%) and African American (27%). Each successive grade seeks to better reflect the racial ethnicity of the City of Newburgh. The current 5th grade class is equally represented by both the Hispanic and African American communities.
Parents/guardians play an important role in the academic success of the student. San Miguel Academy requires that parents/guardians commit to students’ timeliness in arriving and departing from school, assuring that homework assignments are complete and on-time, and attending teacher conferences as established by the school. There is a direct correlation between parental/guardian participation and the academic achievement of the student.
Non-Discrimination Policy:
San Miguel Academy of Newburgh admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
