Who We Are

San Miguel Academy is a tuition free, faith-based, 5th through 8th grade middle school for boys from underserved families in the City of Newburgh, NY. Nearly all of the students attending San Miguel Academy are eligible for free or reduced-price meals under Title 1 of the federal poverty guidelines. San Miguel Academy provides a safe haven for intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth. The school, a member of the Nativity Miguel Network of schools, opened in the 2006 academic year and today serves nearly 60 boys in the fifth through the eighth grades. Like its network counterparts, San Miguel Academy utilizes:

· small class size- typically 15 students per grade;
· extended school days-7:45 am - 5:00pm; and
· an extended school year and summer program…

to fight the cycle of poverty through education. Students who attend San Miguel Academy are provided academic, personal and family support to reposition themselves for success in their future endeavors.

The Nativity Miguel Network of Schools, www.nativitymiguelschools.org, has more than 30 years of success using its educational model. Nearly all of the students who attend a network school arrive one or more years behind grade level in academic skills. This gap is typically overcome within the first year of attending a Nativity Miguel school. Of the over 4,400 students in the network nationwide, nearly 90% graduate from high school (as opposed to a 50% national graduation rate for African American students and a 53% graduation rate for Hispanic students). Network students attend school for 9.5 hours per day or 538 more hours per year than their public school peers. The average daily attendance rate at a network school is 97%.
